What is NuCalm?

NuCalm is a subscription app that plays music layered with what the company calls neuroacoustic software: sound patterns designed to move your nervous system out of "fight or flight" and into a resting state. You don't meditate or follow instructions. You lie down, put on headphones and an eye mask, and press play.

The company says NuCalm began as a clinical device used by doctors, sports teams and the military, and moved to a consumer app in November 2021.

What you get on the SLEEPSUITE plan

Other plans add channels for focus and energy. They cost more, so check NuCalm's plans page for current prices.

What you'll need: a phone, decent headphones or earbuds, an eye mask, and a bedside speaker for DeepSleep.

Does NuCalm work? What the evidence shows

What's reasonably well supported: slow, calming sound and guided relaxation can reduce feelings of stress and help some people fall asleep. Lying still in the dark for 20 minutes is restful in itself.

What rests mainly on the company: NuCalm describes itself as clinically proven. Most of the support it points to comes from its own research, its medical advisers, two US patents and endorsements. A patent shows that a method is new, not that it works. NuCalm's own legal disclaimer says it isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition.

What we'd treat with caution: sweeping claims such as it suiting "any human" or doing "no harm". It's unlikely to hurt you, but individual results vary and it's no substitute for medical care.

Who should talk to a doctor first

If you've had trouble sleeping for more than a few weeks, snore loudly or stop breathing in your sleep, feel very low, or take sleep medication, talk to your doctor. Never stop or change prescribed medication on your own.

FAQ

Is NuCalm worth the money?

For someone who has tried meditation apps and couldn't settle, it may be. The free trial is the honest way to find out, as long as you set a reminder.

Does NuCalm have side effects?

The company reports no adverse events. Some people may find the sound or the headphones uncomfortable. If you feel unwell, stop.

Do I need special headphones?

No, but good-quality headphones or earbuds give a better experience, according to NuCalm. DeepSleep plays through a speaker.

Can I use NuCalm offline?

Yes. You can download sessions in the app.

Is there a NuCalm alternative?

Meditation apps, sleep stories and free relaxation audio are cheaper. For long-term insomnia, CBT-I through your doctor is the recommended first step.
